★ Personal Lines · Plus a Small Business Policy
How Stillwater Works in Arkansas.
Stillwater is a national personal-lines company that can cover most of a household from one place — the house, the cars, the rental property, the umbrella — and add a small businessowners policy on the side. Here's what it actually writes, where its ratings currently sit, how an Arkansas roof really settles, and how we'll tell you when Stillwater isn't the answer.
Short Answer
Cribb Insurance Group is an independent agency in Bentonville, and we hold the Stillwater appointment. Stillwater is a personal-lines company first — homeowners, condominium, renters, landlord and dwelling fire, auto, personal umbrella and earthquake — with a small businessowners policy alongside them for households that also run something. It's written nationally out of Jacksonville, Florida, has been writing since 2000, and reaches you through independent and affiliated agencies. The honest read: its strength is breadth across one household rather than depth in any single specialty, its two rating agencies currently disagree with each other, and both of those facts are worth understanding before you decide — so we've put them on the page rather than under it.
You can reach this one two ways. They aren't the same afterward.
Some carriers only sell through agencies. Stillwater isn't one of them — it reaches customers through independent agencies and through affiliated channels, so it's entirely possible to end up with a Stillwater policy without an agency being involved. That's worth saying plainly, because it changes what the honest argument for using us actually is.
The argument is not access. It's what happens after the policy is issued, and what happens on the day the answer stops being this carrier. A quoting channel is built to sell you the policy in front of it. An independent agency holds more than forty appointments, which means the same conversation that put you here is the one that can move you somewhere else — and on a personal-lines account that matters more than most people expect, because renewals move, roofs age, and appetite shifts.
The honest boundary, stated up front: holding the appointment is not the same as recommending it. Stillwater is one market on a long list. Whether it belongs on your household depends on the property, the roof, the drivers and what else is competing for the account that month.
One company's answer
You get a price from the company you're talking to, and the comparison stops there. That works fine when the risk is simple and the price is right. It gets thin at renewal, when the only options on the table are the ones this carrier still offers.
One of forty-plus answers
Stillwater gets quoted next to the rest of the market, and the same agency that placed it can move it when the numbers change. The caveat is fair: an agency is only worth this if it actually re-shops the account, so ask us how often we do.
Where a Stillwater policy earns its keep.
The forms on a homeowners or auto policy look broadly like everyone else's. The difference is in the shape of the company — what it's built to write, and how much of one household it can take. Three worth naming.
One company across a whole household
Home, condominium, renters, auto, landlord, dwelling fire, personal umbrella and earthquake can sit with a single company. The value isn't tidiness — it's that coverage stops falling into the gaps between carriers, where a liability question lands between a homeowners policy at one company and an umbrella at another and both point at the other's form. It also makes renewal one conversation instead of four.
Landlord and dwelling fire written as a core line
Rental property is a real part of this company's book rather than an accommodation written off to one side, which matters in a market like ours where a lot of households own one or two rentals in addition to the house they live in. A carrier that genuinely wants the class tends to underwrite it with judgment instead of declining it on a rule. Our honest add — appetite is specific and it moves, so which properties fit this quarter is the first thing we check, and it's an underwriting conversation rather than something we'll publish on a page.
A small businessowners policy sitting next to the personal account
For the household that also runs something — a shop, a service business, a rental portfolio that has outgrown a personal policy — a businessowners policy with general liability and commercial property can sit alongside the personal lines rather than requiring a separate relationship somewhere else. The limit worth knowing: this is small commercial, not a commercial specialty program. A contractor with payroll, a fleet and bond requirements belongs with a different set of markets, and we'll say so rather than stretch this one.
Most of a household, plus the small business.

Where this carrier stops, and what we do about it.
Two boundaries worth knowing before you get attached to the idea of putting everything in one place.
Flood is not here. It isn't on a homeowners policy at any carrier. Flood is written through the National Flood Insurance Program or a private flood market, and it's a separate policy with its own waiting period. If your property needs it, that's a conversation to have now rather than in April.
Real commercial is not here either. The businessowners policy is built for small, straightforward operations. Payroll, fleets, contract bonds and jobsite exposure belong with commercial markets built for them. That's not a problem — it's what an independent agency is for. Your household can sit here while your business sits wherever it's actually underwritten well.
The Arkansas roof rule most homeowners find out about too late
This is the single most consequential line on an Arkansas dwelling policy, and almost nobody reads it until there's hail on the ground.
On an Arkansas dwelling policy, a roof settles either at replacement cost or under an Agreed Roof Payment Schedule that the carrier has filed with the Arkansas Insurance Department. Open-ended actual cash value depreciation — where the insurer subtracts years of wear and hands you what's left — is not the correct framing for an Arkansas dwelling roof, whatever you may have read on a national website. That is a genuine consumer protection, and it is specific to this state.
There is one exception that matters enormously in practice. Arkansas Insurance Department Bulletin 17-2023 permits a mandatory actual cash value endorsement for wind and hail damage once a roof reaches an age of seven years. So a household with an older roof can be on a genuinely different settlement basis from the neighbor with a newer one, on policies that otherwise look identical — and the two only find out when they compare checks.
The practical point is unglamorous: which basis you're on is printed on your declarations page, and the time to read it is before the storm. When we set up or review an account we go through the settlement basis, the roof's age, and what your deductible actually does on a wind and hail loss, because that's where the surprise lives. Send us the declarations page and we'll tell you which one you're on.

Each line gets its own page with the Arkansas specifics and the parts a quote screen never tells you. All six are live.
Stillwater Cribby reads the declarations page, not the brochure.
Cribby the Chameleon is our guide to reading a policy in plain English.
A chameleon adapts to its surroundings, which is the whole idea on a household account. Coverage isn't a product you pick off a shelf; it gets shaped around the house, the roof, the drivers, the rental property and whatever you've started doing on the side. Cribby can also answer the questions this page deliberately won't — whether a particular roof age, home age, property type or class of work is likely to fit. That's underwriting territory, and it belongs in a conversation rather than in published copy.
Two agencies, two answers. Here's both.
Why we lead with candor here instead of a badge
The easy version of this section picks the better of the two letters, puts it in a large font, and moves on. We'd rather you understand the position than be impressed by a graphic. A rating tells you how one agency currently assesses a company's capacity to pay claims — useful, real, and worth knowing. It does not tell you how your claim will go, whether your renewal holds, or whether your property still fits the appetite in three years. Those are different questions with different answers.
Our job isn't to hand you a letter grade and call it advice. It's to weigh the ratings alongside the coverage, the appetite, the service and the renewal history, put this carrier next to the other markets we hold, and have somewhere to move you if any of that stops working. If you'd rather be with a carrier sitting higher on the AM Best scale, say so and we'll show you what that looks like on your account. That's a legitimate preference and it's an easy conversation to have.
What we actually do at a claim
Narrower than some agencies imply, and we'd rather be straight about it. We don't adjust your claim and we can't overrule an adjuster.
What we do: help you decide whether a claim is worth reporting before you report it, make sure the coverage that should respond gets identified, tell you which settlement basis your roof is actually on before anyone climbs on it, chase the file when it stalls, get documents out the door when a lender demands them, flag when a renewal means it's time to re-shop the account, and move your policies to another of our markets if this one stops fitting. That last one is the part a single-carrier channel structurally cannot do for you.
Priced on your property and your drivers, not a table.
A personal premium isn't a discount off a chart — it's built from the age and construction of the home, the age and condition of the roof, your protection class and distance to a fire department, the deductible structure, your claims history, and on the auto side the drivers, vehicles, mileage and coverage selected. Discounts for holding more than one policy, insuring more than one vehicle, protective devices and paperless billing are commonly available, and which ones actually apply is account-specific rather than a promise. Two houses on the same street can price very differently once the roof year lands, which is why a planning figure on a carrier page would mislead more than it helps and we don't publish one. Nothing here is a quote or a guarantee, and a first-term number isn't a promise about renewal. What reliably helps: get the real information in front of the market, then let us compare where it lands.

Financial Strength Ratings and Financial Stability Ratings are opinions of an insurer's ability to meet its ongoing insurance obligations, are issued by independent rating agencies using their own separate scales and methodologies, are subject to change, and are not recommendations to purchase, hold or terminate any policy, nor do they address an insurer's claims-handling practices. The B++ (Good) Financial Strength Rating and bbb+ Long-Term Issuer Credit Rating referenced are assigned by AM Best to Stillwater Insurance Company in its rating action of April 16, 2025; the A (Exceptional) Financial Stability Rating referenced is assigned by Demotech.
