Replaced new — and covered beyond your stuff.

Renters insurance protects three things people underestimate: your belongings at replacement cost, your personal liability, and your living costs if your rental becomes unlivable. Here's what it actually covers, why your landlord's policy isn't yours, and the valuables worth scheduling — from an independent agency that places Liberty Mutual every day, usually for a few dollars a month.

The short answer

A Liberty Mutual renters policy covers three things renters tend to underestimate: your belongings at replacement cost (Full Value on Personal Property is built in), your personal liability (from $100,000 up to $500,000), and your loss of use — living costs if a covered loss makes your place unlivable, up to 12 months. What it isn't: your landlord's insurance, which covers the building, not you. It's usually the least expensive policy you'll own, it bundles with auto for a discount, and it's backed by an A (Excellent) carrier — quoted against 40+ others.

What it actually protects

Three things — and two of them surprise people.

Renters insurance isn't just "coverage for your stuff." It's three separate protections in one inexpensive policy.

Replacement cost, built in

Your belongings

Furniture, electronics, clothes, the kitchen — covered against fire, theft, and other perils. Full Value on Personal Property is included, so a claim pays to replace your things at today's cost, not their depreciated value.

$100,000 up to $500,000

Your liability

If a guest is hurt in your unit, or you're responsible for damage — including, in many cases, water damage to the unit below — personal liability responds to the claim and the legal defense. It starts at $100,000 and can be raised.

Up to 12 months

Your living costs

If a covered loss makes your rental unlivable, loss-of-use coverage pays the extra cost of somewhere else to stay — a hotel or short-term rental — plus related expenses, for up to a year while your place is repaired.

Replacement cost, and your valuables

Replaced at today's price — with one thing to check.

The default is genuinely good. The one place renters get caught is the special limit on valuables.

Full RC replacement cost on your things

Full Value on Personal Property is built into the policy, so covered belongings are replaced at what they cost new today — not a depreciated payout. It's the difference between replacing a five-year-old TV and being handed what a five-year-old TV is "worth."

Broaden it, and cover the perils too.

By default, contents are covered on a named-peril basis — a defined list of causes like fire, theft, and windstorm. You can broaden that to open-peril coverage (Special Personal Property), which covers more causes of loss with fewer gaps. For a renter with real belongings, it's often worth the small step up.

Scheduling and open-peril coverage are the two levers we reach for most on a renters policy — one protects specific valuables, the other broadens everything else. Which you need depends on what you own, and it's a quick conversation.

The one thing worth checking: your valuables.

A renters policy caps what it pays for theft of certain valuables — jewelry, watches, and furs sit under a special limit of about $1,500 per item and $3,000 total, with similar caps on firearms and silverware. Own a ring, a camera kit, or a collection worth more? You can raise the special limits or schedule the item for its agreed value, which usually removes the deductible too. This is the surprise we exist to prevent — a five-minute step at the quote instead of a bad discovery after a theft.

Coverages worth adding

The add-ons that punch above their price.

Optional coverages that close common gaps — most of them a few dollars on an already inexpensive policy.

Up to $10,000

Water back-up & sump overflow

Covers damage to your belongings when water backs up through a drain, sump, or sump pump — a loss a base renters policy typically excludes. Not flood; a separate exposure worth adding.

$25,000 aggregate

Identity Recovery

Expenses to recover from identity theft, with help-line and case-management support, plus a sub-limit for lost wages and child or elder care. Small add, common headache.

To your Coverage C, +$10,000

In-home business

Liability and property coverage for a business run from your rental — on-premises business property up to your contents limit plus an extra $10,000, with limited off-premises and merchandise coverage. Built for the side-gig and the remote worker.

Agreed value

Scheduled valuables

Individually schedule jewelry, cameras, guns, fine arts, musical instruments, or collections for their agreed value — broader coverage than the special limits, usually with no deductible.

$500 · $100 deductible

Home freezer contents

Covers food lost when a freezer or refrigerator fails — a small, practical add for anyone who keeps a full freezer.

Liability add-ons

Loss assessment & more

Loss-assessment coverage for association charges, home day-care liability, and other liability extensions can be added where they fit your situation — the kind of thing we flag when it applies to you.

Optional coverages carry their own limits, deductibles, forms, and eligibility; the issued policy and endorsements control. Some options are subject to underwriting review.
The renting reality, honestly

Your landlord's insurance is not your insurance.

The building is all the landlord insures

Your landlord's policy protects the structure they own — the walls, the roof, the plumbing. It does not cover your belongings, your liability, or your cost to live somewhere else if the building becomes unlivable.

Where that leaves you without a policy.

If a kitchen fire, a burst pipe upstairs, or a break-in damages or takes your things, the landlord's insurer pays you nothing — you're not on that policy. If a guest is hurt in your unit and sues, you're defending it yourself. And if the building is uninhabitable after a covered loss, the cost of a hotel is yours.

Renters insurance is the policy that fills all three gaps, and it's usually inexpensive enough that the math isn't close. It's also why a growing number of Arkansas leases now require it — the landlord knows their policy doesn't cover you, and they'd rather you weren't left exposed. One honest note on Arkansas: standard policies exclude earthquake, and dedicated earthquake coverage here is limited and largely closed to new policies, so if the New Madrid zone is a concern, that's a direct conversation.

Discounts

The ones worth mentioning.

A short list on renters — and bundling with auto is the one that moves the number most.

The big lever

Account credit (bundle with auto)

Carrying your auto with the same carrier applies an account credit to the renters premium — and lowers the total across both policies. On an already inexpensive policy, it's the discount that matters most.

Quote ahead

Advance quote

Getting your quote in before your effective date earns an automatic credit that's largest the further ahead you plan — a free reason not to wait until move-in day.

Protective devices

Burglar alarm

A credit for an approved, maintained burglar alarm system — local, police-station, or central-station monitored. Small, but free if you already have one.

Strength & what we do

Backed by an A (Excellent) carrier.

On September 10, 2025, AM Best affirmed the Financial Strength Rating of A (Excellent) for the members of Liberty Mutual Holding Company Inc., stable outlook — the group behind the companies that write this coverage in Arkansas. A financial strength rating is an opinion about an insurer's ability to pay claims; it doesn't grade how a specific claim is handled, and it isn't a recommendation to buy or keep a policy. Different question, different source — the current rating is at ambest.com.

Where we earn it on a renters policy.

The renters mistakes are small but consistent: a coverage amount set below what it would cost to replace everything, a liability limit left at the floor, and valuables left under a special limit. We fix those at the quote — usually for a few dollars either way. We don't adjust your claim and can't overrule an adjuster — but we'll tell you whether a claim is worth filing, make sure the right coverage responds, and move you to another of our 40-plus markets if Liberty Mutual stops fitting.

What it costs

Usually the cheapest policy you'll own.

A few dollars a month, typically

Renters insurance is among the least expensive coverage a household can buy, but the exact price still depends on your coverage amount, deductible, location, and any valuables you schedule — so a posted figure would mislead more than help. This isn't a quote or a guarantee. What reliably keeps it low: bundling with auto for the account credit, choosing a sensible deductible, and scheduling only what actually needs it. That's the number we'll build with you.

Frequently asked questions

Liberty Mutual renters questions.

What does renters insurance actually cover?

Three things, and most renters underestimate two of them. First, your belongings — a Liberty Mutual renters policy includes Full Value on Personal Property, which pays to replace your things at today's cost rather than their depreciated value. Second, your personal liability — the coverage that responds if someone is hurt in your unit or you're responsible for damage, from $100,000 up to $500,000.

Third, loss of use — if a covered loss makes your rental uninhabitable, it pays your additional living costs, such as a hotel, for up to 12 months. It's the least expensive policy most people will ever own for what it does.

Doesn't my landlord's insurance cover me?

No, and this is the single biggest misunderstanding in renting. Your landlord's insurance covers the building — the structure they own. It does not cover your belongings, your personal liability, or a hotel if the building becomes uninhabitable.

If a fire, a burst pipe, or a break-in damages or takes your things, the landlord's policy pays them nothing on your behalf. Renters insurance is the policy that covers you, and it's usually inexpensive — which is why a growing number of Arkansas leases now require it.

Is my jewelry, camera, or gun fully covered on a renters policy?

Only up to a limit, and that's the thing worth checking. A renters policy caps how much it pays for theft of certain valuables — jewelry, watches, and furs are subject to a special limit of about $1,500 per item and $3,000 in total, and similar caps apply to items like firearms and silverware.

If you own a ring, a camera kit, or a collection worth more than the cap, you can raise the unscheduled special limits or schedule the item individually for its agreed value, which often removes the deductible. It's a five-minute conversation that prevents a bad surprise after a theft.

Does renters insurance cover water backup or identity theft?

Both are available as add-ons. Water Back-Up and Sump Overflow coverage can be added up to $10,000 for damage to your belongings caused by water backing up through a drain, sump, or sump pump — a loss a base policy typically excludes.

Identity Recovery coverage adds up to $25,000 in expenses to recover from identity theft, including help-line and case-management services and a sub-limit for lost wages. Neither is automatic, and both are inexpensive for what they cover.

How much does renters insurance cost, and is it worth it?

Renters insurance is typically the least expensive policy a household will own, and for what it protects — your belongings at replacement cost, your liability, and your living costs if you're displaced — it's one of the easiest values in insurance.

The exact price depends on your coverage amount, deductible, location, and any valuables you schedule, so we won't post a figure that would only mislead. If you also carry auto, bundling earns an account credit that lowers both. We'll build the real number with you.
