No Matter What You Drive, We have the Coverage for you!

Types of Car Insurance Coverage

Auto insurance covers damage to your vehicle, damages/injuries you cause if you hit someone else, and much more. Check out the different types of coverage we offer below and get a customized car insurance quote.

Covers you if you're at fault in an accident

Your basic car insurance plan begins with auto liability. Liability insurance is generally required by state law and protects you financially when you're liable for your actions as a driver:

Bodily injury liability: Pays medical bills and lost income (up to your limits) if you hit someone and they're injured. This covers anyone in the accident, plus legal fees if you're taken to court as a result of the incident.

Property damage liability: Pays for damages (up to your limits) to someone else's vehicle and/or property.

Example: You lose control of your vehicle and hit a pedestrian on a bicycle in a crosswalk. Liability will cover the pedestrians injuries and the cost to repair their bicycle.

If you're looking for a "full-coverage" auto quote, understand the term is a bit of a myth. "Full coverage" car insurance means something different to everyone, but it usually includes protecting your vehicle with comprehensive and collision coverage.

Covers events beyond your control

Comprehensive coverage protects your vehicle against fire, theft, vandalism, hitting an animal, glass breakage, or weather/acts of nature. A deductible (the amount of money you'll pay out of pocket before your insurer pays the rest) usually applies, but you'll be able to choose the amount.

Example: You hit a deer, wrecking your front bumper and windshield. The damage amounts to $3,500. Your deductible is $250, so your carrier will pay you $3,250.

Covers car accidents

Collision coverage pays to repair or replace your damaged vehicle if you collide with another object, including vehicles, curbs, trees, etc. Collision covers you regardless of fault and also includes a deductible.

Example: Your car skids on an icy highway and plows into a tree, causing $8,000 in damage to your vehicle. Your deductible is $500, so your carrier pay you $7,500.

Free coverage for pet injuries: If you have collision coverage, and your pet is injured in an auto accident, Progressive covers your vet bills up to a specified limit.

Uninsured/underinsured bodily injury

Covers your injuries if someone else hits you and can't pay

Uninsured/underinsured bodily injury covers you and your passengers (up to your limits) if you're injured in an accident and the at-fault driver has no insurance or not enough insurance.

Example: You're rear-ended in a car accident and the other driver has no auto insurance. Your carrier will pay for your medical bills and lost income as a result of the incident.

Uninsured/underinsured motorist property damage

Covers your vehicle damage if someone else hits you and can't pay

Uninsured/underinsured property damage pays to repair or replace your vehicle (up to your limits) if you're hit by a driver with not enough insurance or none at all.

Example: Your car is totaled after an uninsured driver crashes into it. Your policy's uninsured property damage will cover the cost to replace your vehicle up to a specified limit. A deductible may apply.

Medical payments

Covers your injuries, funeral expenses, and more

If you're in an accident, medical payments will pay for medical and funeral expenses (up to your limits). Medical payments can also cover your family members or passengers, regardless of fault. The coverage also applies if you or your family members are passengers in other vehicles or hit by a car while you're walking or riding a bicycle.

In some states, personal injury protection is offered for medical payments and protects you in a similar way.

Example: You're in a fender bender on your lunch break and your co-worker, in the passenger's seat, is injured. Your medical payments will cover your co-worker's hospital bill (up to your limits). A deductible may apply for personal injury protection.

Roadside assistance

Helps you if you're stranded on the road

Progressive's Roadside Assistance pays for a towing service if your car breaks down for any reason, whether you're on the road or in your driveway. We'll tow you to the nearest repair facility or the mechanic of your choice if the shop is within 15 miles. Roadside assistance also provides lock-out service, flat-tire changes, fuel/fluid delivery if you run out of gas and more.

Example: On a long road trip, seemingly in the middle of nowhere, your tire goes flat. Your carrier tow you the nearest mechanic and pay based on your selected coverage limit.

Loan/lease payoff

Helps pay off your loan if you total your car

You may need this coverage if you finance or lease your car. Also known as gap insurance, loan lease payoff covers the difference between what you owe on your vehicle and what it's actually worth (up to 25% of the actual cash value).

Example: Your car is totaled in a covered accident, and your collision coverage pays you what your vehicle is worth—$25,000. But you're financing your car and owe $29,000 on the loan. Loan/lease payoff covers that remaining $4,000 gap.

Rental car reimbursement

Pays for rental car fees

If your car is in a "covered accident," we'll pay for you to have a rental (up to your limits, typically up to $30-$50 per day) while your vehicle is in at the body shop. A covered accident is something we pay for and does not include routine maintenance.

Example: The shop owner estimates it will take two weeks to repair your car. Rental car coverage will pay for a replacement vehicle during that period.

Custom parts and equipment value

Covers anything you add to your car

Custom parts and equipment (CPE) coverage will repair or replace items that you add on to your car, like a stereo, navigation system, custom wheels, or even a paint job. If it wasn't installed by the original manufacturer, then it's considered an after-market accessory that you'll want to insure.

Example: You put custom tires and rims on your car. CPE coverage will typically insure them up to a $5,000 limit depending on the carrier.

Rideshare coverage

For Uber, Lyft, and other rideshare drivers

Rideshare coverage extends your auto insurance to cover you when you're logged into a ridesharing app and waiting for a trip request/customer. This is important because rideshare companies' insurance policies offer limited coverage during this time and may not cover any damages to your car. Typically, their policies only offer more coverage after you've accepted a trip request and while driving a customer. Rideshare coverage helps fill that gap.*

Example: You're an Uber driver and log into the app as you're running errands. While waiting for a trip request, you crash your car into a guardrail causing thousands of dollars in damage. Uber won't cover damage to your car because you haven't officially accepted a trip request. Rideshare coverage would cover your damages.

Please note: Rideshare insurance coverage extends the exact same coverages you selected on your policy. So, you would need the optional comprehensive and collision coverages to pay for damage to your car.  This option is only available with certain carriers, ask your agent for details

Deductible savings

Helps pay your deductible

You can add our deductible savings feature, which will subtract $50 from your collision and comprehensive deductible for every claim-free policy period. Auto policy periods last six months.

Example: You select $500 deductibles for comprehensive and collision on your Progressive policy. With deductible savings coverage, your deductibles will drop to $450 if you're claim-free after six months. If you're claim-free again for the next six months, the deductibles drop to $400. And so on, until you get to $0.

Keep in mind that coverages, limits, and deductibles vary. You'll get more information when you quote. All coverages subject to policy terms and conditions. Deductible savings is an option that is not available with every carrier, ask your agent for availability.

Two ways to quote. Tons of ways to save.
